Black Seed Oil: Skin, Immune & Metabolic Health

Nigella is an aromatic digestive, antioxidant plant with organ protective and metabolic effects, it has been found to exhibit potent anti-parasitic and anthelmintic activity.

Much of Nigella sativa’s therapeutic activity is attributed to its primary bioactive constituent, thymoquinone. Thymoquinone has been extensively studied for its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-allergic effects, with evidence demonstrating its ability to regulate both innate and adaptive immune responses.

Clinical and experimental research suggests black seed oil may be beneficial in allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, and eczema, where immune dysregulation and chronic inflammation are key drivers. Thymoquinone has been shown to reduce histamine release, stabilise mast cells, and downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines and leukotrienes, contributing to improvements in allergy related symptoms.

In addition, thymoquinone exhibits protective effects on the gut, liver, and respiratory tissues, while helping to reduce oxidative stress and microbial burden. These actions may further support immune balance, particularly in individuals with chronic inflammation, recurrent infections, or hypersensitivity conditions.

Black seed oil continues to emerge as a clinically relevant botanical for supporting immune regulation, allergy management, and inflammation balance, bridging traditional medicine with modern research.

• Allergic conditions (PMID 39121267): A double blind, placebo controlled trial found that thymoquinone standardised Nigella sativa oil significantly reduced nasal and ocular symptoms in seasonal allergic rhinitis, with improved quality of life.

• Metabolic and inflammatory health (PMID 40714301): A large dose response meta analysis of 82 randomised controlled trials showed Nigella sativa supplementation improved glycaemic control, lipid profile, blood pressure, inflammatory markers, and antioxidant status.

• Antimicrobial and antioxidant activity (PMID 38997638): Experimental analysis confirmed thymoquinone rich Nigella sativa extracts exhibit broad spectrum antimicrobial, antiparasitic, biofilm disrupting, and antioxidant effects.
